Nias Charitable Foundation 2005 PDF Print E-mail
After many journeys through Asia, Africa and South America, Sabine Barthelme, a media consultant, and Tobias Ranzinger, a television host and journalist, visited the island of Nias for the first time in the summer of 2004.

Sabine and Tobias were deeply impressed by Nias' unique culture, including its megalithic villages with their elaborately designed pole houses. Entire extended families, usually three generations or more, function together under one roof, often subsisting off the land.

After the devastation of the 2004 and 2005 earthquakes, Sabine and Tobias decided to do something to help Nias and its people. Giving money to an established aid organisation did not seem to be enough. They wanted to be sure all of the money reached those in need and was not diverted to administrative overhead or less-than-urgent aid objectives. But even more importantly, Nias is a remote and little known island. The difficulties faced by the people there have not been a focus of media attention. Sabine and Tobias wanted to be sure that Nias received the help it so desperately needs. Hence, the created Nias Charitable Foundation.

Nias Charitable Foundation's objectives are to:

* Be a lean organisation that brings aid quickly and directly to where it is needed most.
* Use the guidance of German and Indonesian missionaries who have lived on Nias for many years, as well as the advice of several Nias locals, in determining where to distribute aid.
* Direct all donations thoughtfully but without the use of an administrative aparatus or expensive representatives.

Sabine and Tobias collect all donations to Nias Charitable Foundation and bring them to Nias so that 100% of what you give goes directly to the people.
